I started this illustration as a Chinese pangolin but it evolved into a more ambiguous pangolin with elements of multiple species. The poaching & illegal trade of pangolins spans continents and cannot be considered as separate based on location – when one species becomes too scarce another is poached in turn. As populations dwindled in Asia, trafficking from Africa increased and now a majority of pangolin products traded in China are actually from Africa.
I have recently been inspired by circular shapes and love their presence and symbolism in the natural world. Amidst all the damage that humans cause I wanted this Pangolin to be a symbol of peace, flow and connectedness – nature untouched; diverse but unified in our absence.
This was the part of a series of paintings for “Vulnerable Animals Week” – highlighting one threatened animals species from each continent.
